Pi Sigma Delta Alumnae Association holds ‘Fun Walk’ on Sunday, January 25
The Outstanding Women Scholars’ Fund of the Pi Sigma Delta Alumnae Association marks its fourth year on Sunday, January 25, with a Fun Walk called “Walk Your Talk” at the academic oval of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. “Walk Your Talk” kicks off at 6:00 a.m. at the front steps of Palma Hall.

The activity aims to raise funds to support more UP women scholars in science and technology courses. There will be a registration fee of P50 for children, P100 for students and senior citizens, and P300 for all other participants.

Guests of honor include UP’s first woman president Emerlinda Roman, the UP College of Engineering’s first woman dean Rowena Guevarra, and Michaela Fudolig, physics professor and College of Science assistant secretary.

The Fund was created in 2005 by alumnae of the Pi Sigma Delta Sorority to provide financial assistance to UP women with excellent academic standing enrolled in science and technology courses, coming from households with an annual income of P250,000 and lower.

The Fund is specifically intended for students third year or higher, when they are already taking major subjects. The Fund provides qualified students a grant of P5,000 per semester to cover miscellaneous and incidental expenses. Scholars must have a 2.25 general weighted average, must have no incompletes, no dropped courses and no grades of 4.0 or 5.0.

The Fund is the Pi Sigma Delta Alumnae Association’s way of helping keep the best and brightest—but poor—UP women in school, amid high drop out rates. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) National Commission of the Philippines had said three years ago that only 20 to 22 percent of college freshmen eventually make it to 4th year.

With its emphasis on science and technology, the Scholars’ Fund helps fill the need for more graduates in the sciences who can generate and apply new scientific and technical knowledge that could help improve the quality of lives of Filipinos.

The Philippines still has a low number of scientists and engineers. The UP College of Science said the ratio at present is only 0.48 per 10,000 population, while the Unesco benchmark is 3.4 for every 10,000.

The Pi Sigma Delta Sorority is a socio-political sisterhood whose advocacies include the rights and welfare of women, students and marginalized sectors, nurturing the ideals of leadership and excellence among its members.
